El Día de la Virgen del Carmen takes place on 16 July to commemorate the patron saint of sailors and fishermen and is observed all over Spain, its islands and Spanish speaking countries. Fishing communities pay homage to the Virgin for the seagoing protection of their mariners by staging traditional maritime processions and blessings of decorated fishing boats around the ports and harbours. How the fiesta got its name can be traced back to biblical times.
The Virgen del Carmen, also known as Nuestra Señora de Monte Carmelo Our Lady of Mount Carmel’ is the name given to the Blessed Virgin Mary in her role as patroness of the Carmelite Order.
